Yoshio Taylor

Yoshio Taylor has worked in clay for over two decades and has become one of Sacramento Valley’s foremost artist in the field of ceramics. Taylor received his master's degree from California State University, Sacramento in 1979. He went on to University of California, Berkeley where he received his Master of Fine Arts while studying with Peter Voulkos. Currently, he teaches full time at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento.

Some of Taylor's major exhibitions include: Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara California; The Society for Contemporary Crafts, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Dorothy Weiss Gallery, San Francisco Crafts and Folk Art Museum, San Francisco, California and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California.

"Like all good art, the work of Yoshio Taylor requires nothing more to enjoy than a ready pair of eyes—or sensitive fingers. His work is so emphatically present and appealing that one need know nothing further about Taylor or the themes that he investigates. The images are clear and robust. They are skillfully carved and handsomely glazed; the symbols and forms are somewhat familiar and also sufficiently novel so as to draw the viewer closer for finer inspection. Marvelous arabesques are in counterpoint with strict geometric forms, sensuous figuration is juxtaposed with gestural abstractions, warm terracotta, rough textured clay still with the artist’s finger prints are crisply adjacent to highly refined painterly surfaces... We know we are in front of something that is speaking to us, but what might that something be? For the casual observer, they may be satisfied with only this; a rich, visual treat"
