Victor Spinski
Victor Spinski is one of the two
founders of the trompe l’oeil movement in ceramics.
Spinski’s installations took the movement to
the edge: his monumental work of a VW Bug, crashing
into an exposed brick wall (entirely ceramic) with
falling mortar and a broken fountain brought trompe
l’oeil ceramics to a new level by way of size
and subject. His depictions of everyday objects, from
hardware to paint cans to fast food, imbibe political
and social commentary into a medium long-associated
with craft.
Victor Spinski received the NEA Craftsman’s Fellowship in 1974 and is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and the National Council for Education of Ceramic Arts
