D. A. Bishop
The American landscape plays a vital role in the definition of national identity and pride, both a tribute to the glorious past and a testament to a bright future. From the idea of Manifest Destiny in the 19th century, to the painting of Albert Bierstadt and Frederick Church, to the Transcendentalist poets, to the cowboys of the “Wild West,” the very soil, rock, and landmarks of America influenced politics, art, literature, and identity in the United States. With Americans always moving forward, moving West, exploring new territory and new possibility, the American landscape came to shape and mold the lay of American society, personality, and character.
The new body of painting presented by D.A. Bishop addresses the issues of identity, psychology, and the landscape. The images are snapshots of the classic American road trip. They are not merely observations but dedications, each painting showing an understanding of the land infused with appreciation and camaraderie. Highway Garage illustrates a roadside gas station and auto shop completely void of people, but inviting nonetheless. The stark, white walls paired with the deep shadows of the awning and the trees make the cool greens and shady garages appear to be an oasis on a hot highway.
