Almeida offers us much more than the immediate satisfactions of well-painted celebrations of the visual world. On closer inspection the careful viewer desiring greater range of nuanced qualities will not be disappointed. It is true that his landscapes have an immediate pleasurable appearance; the compositions are strong, they open up from a central core and a firm horizon line, the viewer is lead confidently via a sinuous path through the entire visual field, visiting all the clusters of lush color and elegant forms. But for those who would linger a while inspecting the fine detail of his work, one will find beautifully realized color chords, intervals that are nothing less than poetic, mound of paint that take on the heft and purpose of relief sculpture.
